The brief statement that we often call the “Golden Rule” was spoken by Jesus, and you can find it in Matthew 7:12. Here is what it says: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Although Jesus’ words seem simple, in reality they are very difficult to put into action. No matter how hard we try, all too often we fall short and fail to treat others the way we know we should. Why is that? One reason is because we get so wrapped up in our own lives that we fail to see the needs of others. To put it another way, we only think of our own needs, and not the needs of those around us. We find ourselves saying with the Apostle Paul, “I have the desire to do what is good but I cannot carry it out” (Romans 7:18).

What is the problem? The Bible says that our real problem is that we are sinners. Sin—like a deadly cancer—has invaded our souls, making us weak and unable to do what is right. And that is why we need Christ, because He came into the world to forgive us and save us from sin’s power.

Don’t try to live the way you should in your own strength. Instead, ask Christ to come into your life to cleanse you and save you. Then ask Him to give you a new love for others, and to help you treat them the way you would want to be treated. How different our world would be if everyone did!
