Q:

Will science ever cure all the things that go wrong with us? If we do manage to eliminate all disease, does this mean we'll be able to live forever? Questions like this fascinate me.

A:

I’m very grateful for the advances medical science has made during my lifetime; I seriously doubt if I’d still be alive if it weren’t for them. Many of you reading this probably could say the same thing. The Bible reminds us that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father” (James 1:17).

I am not a scientist or physician, of course—but I do not believe we’ll ever be able to conquer all disease. Illness and accidents are an inescapable part of life—and they always will be. Medical researchers, I’ve been told, are often baffled by the way old diseases mutate into new ones that are sometimes more lethal than the original.

But someday all sickness and disease will be banished! Someday, the Bible says, Christ will come again in glory, and all sin and sickness and death will be destroyed. We know this is true because Jesus Christ conquered death by His resurrection from the dead. His resurrection is our guarantee of eternal life!

Down inside we all yearn to live forever. It’s the reason why people spend enormous amounts of time and money trying to keep old age at bay. But death is a reality, and beyond it is eternity —either with God in Heaven, or in that place of absolute despair the Bible calls Hell. Don’t gamble with your soul, but put your faith and trust in Christ for your salvation today. The Bible says, “God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9).
