Q:

A friend of mine admits that the Bible forbids a married person from having sex outside of marriage (i.e. adultery), but he claims it doesn't say anything about unmarried people having sex. Is he right?


A:

No, he is not. The Bible clearly teaches that all sexual relations outside marriage are wrong in God’s eyes. The Bible bluntly says, “Flee from sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18). This includes any kind of sexual activity apart from marriage.

Remember that God gave us the gift of sex in the first place–and He intended for it to be a source of joy and happiness for us. But He also intended for it to be restricted to marriage. Why? One reason is because it was to be a sign of the unity between a husband and wife. It was, in other words, meant to be an expression of their mutual commitment and love. But sex outside marriage easily becomes selfish, and even boring.

God knows what is best for us, including this important area of our lives. Why ignore His way, when it is best for us in the long run? The Bible warns, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12) The Bible also promises, “Blessed are they whose ways are blameless” (Psalm 119:1).

Pray for your friend; I can’t help but wonder if he is only looking for an excuse to live a life of self-indulgence and immorality. But there is forgiveness and new life for all who turn to Christ in repentance and faith. Yes, we live in a sex-saturated society–but with God’s help we can follow a far better path.

    I’m guilty of that sin. It lead me to an awful life. I’m 53 and still searching for my soulmate.

      You are not alone in that category I was in that category as well. But, I started going to church and made sure I was right with God and then prayed to God to give me a soulmate. Within a year, I was blessed to meet someone that came to our church with her brother looking for a Christian church. Within a year we met and got married and I have been blessed ever since. I will be married 15 years this April. Keeping God in this marriage has also kept us being blessed and being able to lead others to God which is our duly service. No, none of us are perfect as well. God forgave me of my sins and continues to do so on a daily basis since WE all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. So, keep the faith. God is there for You.

    My husband says where does it mention a license in the Bible? So he believes it is okay to live with someone outside of marriage. I believe it is fornication and sin. Is his argument valid?

      Sinners are prohibited to enter into heaven:
      1 Cor.6:9-10, Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

      There isn’t anywhere in the bible that specifically states license. Even in the beginning when God said that Man shall leave Father and Mother and he shall cleave to Wife and they will become one, God didn’t say anything about requiring a license to do this. Even if there was something stated in the bible about a license people would still come up with something to justify their actions, unfortunately. Any bible believer that reads the bible from front to rear will know God’s Word and know where God stands on whether it is a sin or not.

    my daughter’s fiance told her that “his catholic priest told him that an unmarried woman with a child can have sex”. I think this far fetched and he may have construed what his priest said and added on to further his case of having sex with my daughter before marriage, I don’t believe that his priest came out and said that. My daughter does have a child but it was through an assault.

    Am glad Dr. Graham clarifies this for many people.

      Amen to that. There is a lot of that going around today stating things or misquoting things from the bible. That’s why we should that love God, read the bible everyday to rightly divide the Word of truth from the untruth.
