Q:

I worry about our grandchildren, because it seems like they have so many more pressures on them than we did when we were young. But I'm not sure their parents even see it this way. Am I right to be concerned?

A:

Yes, you should be concerned, because you’re right: young people today have pressures on them that those of us who are older never imagined. From social media to advertising to entertainment, young people today face a constant barrage of voices telling them to enjoy life to the fullest and live only for themselves.

To be fair, young people have always faced pressures and temptations that weren’t much different from those they face today. But what is different is that they have more ways to give in to those pressures. Furthermore, our society has almost lost any sense of right and wrong—and as a result, young people end up believing they shouldn’t feel guilty if they indulge in immoral or destructive behavior. We’ve forgotten what the writer of Proverbs declared: “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet. … Keep your foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:26-27).

Pray for your grandchildren. Pray not only that they will be kept from evil, but that they will commit their lives to Christ and build their lives on His Word and His plan for them. Pray too for their parents, and as God gives you opportunity, share your concerns with them. Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24).

In addition, ask God to help you be an example to your grandchildren of Christ’s love, peace and goodness. They might not remember your words—but they’ll always remember your example.
