A Look Back at Billy Graham’s Time in the Northeast

Franklin Graham kicked off his Decision America Northeast Tour with a stop in Portland, Maine, on Sunday, May 19. Billy Graham first visited Maine’s most populous city in 1982. During his Crusade there, Mr. Graham reminded some 9,000 people at the Cumberland County Civic Center that we were made to worship the One true God. “People cannot get away from the idea of God,” Mr. Graham shared during the Crusade. He urged folks not to make substitutions but rather to come to know Jesus today.
Of the seven cities Franklin Graham will visit, his father preached in six of those during the 1980s.
People lined the street in Burlington, Vermont, in 1982 to hear Mr. Graham share the Good News of Jesus Christ at Patrick Gymnasium. The turnout of more than 7,000 people exhausted the seating capacity of the university’s basketball gym and prompted officials to open an overflow area in the nearby Gutterson Fieldhouse. Franklin Graham will stop in Burlington on Tuesday.

In 1982, Billy Graham preached to 10,600 people in Manchester, New Hampshire’s Gill Stadium during the course of his Crusade there. To date, the minor league ballpark in Manchester seats around 3,000 people. Franklin Graham will visit Gill Stadium on Thursday, May 23.
Mr. Graham held a time of prayer after people poured forward each day of the Manchester Crusade. An estimated 1,000 people made personal decisions for Jesus Christ during the multi-day ministry event.
Ten thousand people packed into the Springfield (Massachusetts) Civic Center for Mr. Graham’s 1982 Crusade to hear a message of God’s love. An estimated 1,300 people made decisions for Christ. Franklin Graham’s one-day evangelistic rally in Springfield will be held Saturday, May 25.
“If New England should have a spiritual awakening as you have had historically in the past, it can have a tremendous impact on America because the entire nation looks to New England for so many things,” Mr. Graham told folks attending his 1982 Crusade at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Franklin Graham’s Decision America Northeast Tour stop in Providence will be held Sunday, May 26, at Bold Point Park.

Counselors talked with people interested in learning more about a relationship with Jesus Christ during the 1989 Crusade in Syracuse, New York. More than 100,000 people filled the Carrier Dome during the five-day event and 8,000 some people made decisions for Christ. The upcoming Decision America Northeast Tour stop will be held May 30.
