As we all know, our nation’s economy has been going through a very difficult time the last few years. This is one reason why we need to be praying for our leaders (both in government and business), that God will give them wisdom to deal with our problems (see 1 Timothy 2:1-3).

The most important thing I can tell you is that God knows your situation, and He loves you and wants to help you deal with it. Does this mean a new job will suddenly become available? Perhaps so — and I urge you not to give in to your discouragement, but to keep looking. God knows your needs and wants to help you; the Bible says He “comforts the downcast” (2 Corinthians 7:6).

But God also may have something for you that you hadn’t expected. I don’t know what it might be, but (for example) have you looked into job retraining programs in your community? Or have you looked into volunteer opportunities in your community or church? Even if they don’t lead to a paying job, you’ll be helping others and keeping yourself busy. You may also gain valuable experience that will help you later on.

In addition, take your free time as a gift from God, and an opportunity to grow closer to Christ. You have time to pray and read your Bible now; are you doing so? You have time to be part of a Bible study in your church; are you taking advantage of it? The Bible tells us to “make the most of every opportunity” (Colossians 4:5).
