Q:

I've finally had to face how much I've messed up my life. I'm in jail, and when I get out my family doesn't want anything to do with me and my old boss won't rehire me. I can't believe how stupid I've been. I don't know why I'm writing you, but maybe you can pray that I'll get my life together somehow.

A:

You’ve already taken the first step by admitting you have taken the wrong road in life, and that you need to get on a different road. Many in your situation never do this but keep blaming others or thinking the road they’re on will bring them success later on. But it isn’t true.

One of life’s hardest lessons is that we cannot change the past. But we can change the future—and with God’s help, it can be changed for the better. That’s why the most important thing I can tell you is that God cares about you, and He wants to help you. No matter what others may think, you are not worthless in His eyes!

In fact, you are so valuable to God that His only Son, Jesus Christ, gave His life so you could be forgiven of your sins and become part of God’s family forever. The Bible says, “In Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith” (Galatians 3:26).

By a simple prayer of faith tell God you’re sorry for your sins, and that you want to commit your life to Jesus Christ. Then ask Him to show you His plan for your future. Ask Him also to bring others across your path who can encourage and help you. God’s promise is for you: “I know the plans I have for you … plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
