Does the Bible say that it is wrong to have a Christmas tree?

We understand your concerns about the use of the Christmas tree. Some have indicated that this practice is wrong because of the words in Jeremiah 10:1-5. These verses, however, do not apply to Christmas trees, but they do condemn the idolatry practiced in Jeremiah’s day. God’s people were following the customs of the heathen who cut down trees, shaped the wood into idols, decorated them with silver and gold ornaments, and worshiped them as gods.

It is important that we keep Christ central and our worship of Him unhindered in our observance of Christmas. However, we do not believe it is unbiblical to have a Christmas tree lighted and decorated in the home or the church. It has been suggested that the branches of the tree pointing upward can signify praise to God. The star at the top can represent the star of Bethlehem. Also, the green of the evergreens has been recognized as symbolic of eternal life, God’s gift to us through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. Tyron says:

Do not add or subtract from the word of God to make wrong seem right. There is good nd in between.

  2. Paul says:

Here Christians again give way to commercial venues to appease the masses….All I can say is ” Satan keep your lies I will not compromise “

  3. Paula Morris says:

Thank you for the understanding of the Word. I heard a teaching that Christains should not have christmas tress in their houses or the church because it is pagan worship.

  4. Timtohy says:

Word of God is True. We can not change the way we want. I believe it is wrong to put the tree in church and call it as Christmas Tree

  5. Mark says:

Even if the Christmas tree was originally pagan, i believe if decorated with some Christian ornaments and teach our children the the true meaning of Christ-mass, then i see nothing wrong with it. I think that Decorating for Christmas helps emphasize the importance importance of Christ’s birth. In the bible it says that Jesus is the “Tree Of Life” and our Christmas tree can also remind us that he gave us eternal life.

  6. Karla PAREDES says:

Many Christians say yes to celebrate Christmas that there’s nothing wrong with buying a tree and presents.. My church doesn’t celebrate Christmas but think all the houses and streets look beautiful with Christmas lights and decorations..

  7. ava says:

We recognize the scripture and don’t decorate a tree but we do have a nativity scene instead of a tree. I don’t condemn those who have Christmas trees but for those who don’t I personally feel you can still decorate and do so with lights garland and a nativity seen inside the home.

  8. Steve Huff says:

I really liked this answer. I would however like to know more of the history behind the tree and other Christmas symbols.

  9. Lee M. Hall says:

Thank you for clearing this up for me. For years I had been taught that it was wrong. Merry Christmas

  10. carla glenn says:

Thank you for making this clear. We have celebrated Easter without the Easter bunny and Christmas without Santa Claus simply because it took away from our LORD JESUS CHRIST and the Christmas tree has always been a concern of mine as well.
