Q:

I joined the Army straight out of high school, and I've had three tours of duty overseas. But now that I'm out I feel useless, and no one seems to care much about my military service. It's very discouraging. Can God help me?

A:

Veterans Day in our country (or Remembrance Day in Canada)—is a special day set aside to remember with gratitude the sacrifices and dedication of all those who have served in our armed forces. Originally it commemorated the end of the First World War in 1918, but it now honors all men and women who have served in our military—including you. Thank you for your service defending our nation’s freedom.

Yes, God can help you—and He wants to help you, because He cares about you and your future. Not only has He protected you from harm and spared your life in the past, but He knows all about you, and He has a plan for your future. That’s why the most important thing you can do is turn to Jesus Christ and commit your life and your future into His hands. God’s promise is for you: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future'” (Jeremiah 29:11).

What is God’s plan for you? First, He wants you to get to know Him personally—and you will, as you pray and read the Bible, and especially as you become involved in a church where Christ is honored and you can meet people who will encourage you.

In addition, I urge you to consider pursuing more education or vocational training. God wants to take every ability He has given you, and sharpen it for His service.
