Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BG-RRT) chaplains offered emotional and spiritual support during the funeral of a fallen law enforcement officer in Charlotte, N.C., in May. They recently ministered in Smyth County, Va., where an officer lost his life during a traffic stop.

The Marion, Virginia, community is grappling with the tragic death of Deputy Hunter Reedy—a seven-year veteran officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty on August 9.

Reedy was handling a traffic stop when the driver fired a gun. Another officer, Deputy Michael Fedorchuk, was also shot and suffered minor injuries.

Five crisis-trained BG-RRT chaplains recently provided emotional and spiritual care to the mourning community, sharing about the peace only God can provide in life’s darkest moments.

“We mourn the loss of Deputy Hunter Reedy,” the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media. “Hunter leaves behind a wife and 3 small children. Everyone please remember the Reedy family in your prayers over the coming days.”

“When one officer is lost, the entire law enforcement community grieves and we grieve alongside them,” said Josh Holland, international director of BG-RRT, at the time of the shooting.

“Our first responders work thankless jobs as they go out each day to protect and serve their neighbors. The National Law Enforcement Ministry of the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has been asked to come serve these servants in their time of need.”

BG-RRT also sent a Mobile Ministry Center to the area to serve as a safe space for conversations and prayer.

Please pray for the families of these officers and the law enforcement community in Smyth County.
