Chaplains Respond After ‘Historic’ Flooding in Georgia

Hurricane Debby dumped over a foot and a half of rain on Savannah, Ga., destroying many homes. Here, chaplains Bob and Ruthie Cooper talk with two locals who surrendered their hearts to Christ.

Hurricane Debby recently brought torrential rains and dangerous winds to the eastern United States, killing eight people and leaving widespread damage.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Savannah, Georgia.

The city was inundated with at least 20 inches of rain that caused the Ogeechee River to breach four dams in Bulloch County and flood entire neighborhoods.

The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BG-RRT) is in Savannah to provide emotional and spiritual care to those affected by this devastating storm.

“Officials have called the flooding from Hurricane Debby in this area ‘historic,’” Franklin Graham said on social media. “First responders rescued 150 people from neighborhoods over the weekend. Pray with us for the many families who have been affected and are struggling.”

“Hurricane Debby wreaked havoc on many communities along the East Coast,” said Josh Holland, international director of BG-RRT.

“Our crisis-trained chaplains will be there to pray with and listen to those affected by this storm in the coming days, to remind them as the book of Isaiah says, that God will be with them as they ‘pass through deep waters.’”

The team is working alongside humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse.

Please pray for communities reeling in the aftermath of this hurricane, and for BG-RRT chaplains serving them.
