Q:

I think the hardest job in the world is being a single mom. I've had to put my two small children in daycare because I have to work, and I'm always exhausted. I thought divorce was the answer, but it wasn't. Maybe my experience will make someone else stop and think. I wish I had.

A:

Thank you for your letter; I’ve often said that one of the main reasons God opposes divorce is because He loves us and doesn’t want us to go through the heartaches and burdens that almost always come from divorce. Jesus set a very high standard for marriage, but behind it is God’s perfect wisdom and love: “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Matthew 19:6).

But one of the Bible’s greatest truths is that even when we’ve wandered away from His will, God still loves us and wants to help us. He knows all about the physical and emotional burdens you carry, and He also knows the regrets you feel and the worries you experience.

But God hasn’t abandoned you, and the most important thing you can do is turn to Him and commit your life and your family to Jesus Christ. Remember, it’s far better to face the future with God’s help than without it. God’s promise is for you: “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).

How will God help you? One way might be through others who can assist you in practical ways. I know it may feel overwhelming to add still another activity to your life, but ask God to help you find a church where you’ll not only grow spiritually, but will also find others who know what you’re going through, and can help and encourage you.

You can know Jesus today.
