Q:

Several months ago our son died of a drug overdose, and we're still overwhelmed with sadness and guilt. We didn't even realize he was into drugs until it was too late. I don't know why I'm writing, but maybe you can urge parents to be more alert.

A:

Thank you for your letter; may it encourage others to be more alert to this danger. The Bible reminds us that “the wise listen to advice” (Proverbs 12:15).

Losing a child is surely one of the most painful ordeals any parent will ever experience, and my heart goes out to you and your family. Let me assure you, however, that God also knows what you’re going through, and even in the midst of your deepest heartache may you discover His peace. Jesus’ promise is for you: “My peace I give you” (John 14:27).

Drug addiction continues to be a terrible scourge in our society, and I can’t imagine the evil that grips the minds and hearts of those who seek to lure others into drugs. And you’re right: parents need to know the warning signs of drug or alcohol abuse, and take steps to intervene. Ignoring problems or simply hoping they’ll go away accomplishes nothing; often the most loving thing we can do for our children is to give them clear direction.

Parents also need to know who their children’s friends are, and how they are spending their free time; teens can be easily influenced by others. They always need to know, however, that we love them, and because we love them we deeply care what happens to them. Most of all, we need to pray for them, and urge them to commit their lives to Jesus and His plan for their lives. May this be true of you as well.

Commit your life to Christ. Pray now.
