Q:

Is the day of the missionary over? We had some missionaries come to speak in our church recently, and they work in a country so hostile to Christians (and to foreigners) that I wonder if it's even worth trying to do mission work anymore.

A:

If you had asked your question of those missionaries who spoke in your church, I am certain they would have replied, “Of course it’s still worth it to tell others about the Gospel! God loves them just as much as He loves you and me.”

After all, Christ’s final command to His disciples has never been withdrawn: “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15). You and I know about Christ today because those first disciples obeyed that command. No, it wasn’t easy for them—or has it ever been. Whenever the Gospel invades the devil’s territory, there will be conflict.

But there also will be victory—just as Jesus promised. He declared, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Never forget: Christ died for people from every corner of the world, and some day in heaven we will join with our fellow believers “from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

Pray for those whom God has called to go into other parts of the world with the Gospel (especially those your church supports). Encourage them also by your letters and your financial support, and become their partner in the joyous task of telling others of God’s love in Christ.
