Q:

If you somehow had the ability to eradicate just one problem in the world, what would it be? My wife says she'd eliminate hunger, while I lean toward doing away with wars and things like that. I know we can't really do this, but thinking about it is an interesting exercise.

A:

You’ve mentioned two very serious issues that affect millions — but the world faces an almost endless list of problems today, and it seems like they’re only getting worse. Even when one problem gets solved, another takes its place.

But at the heart of almost all our problems is an even deeper problem — and that is the problem of the human heart. What would our world be like if suddenly no one was driven by greed, or jealousy, or a lust for power? What would our world be like if suddenly everyone was motivated by compassion and love for others, and by a spirit of self-sacrifice and mercy? You know the answer: Our world would be a far better, more peaceful place.

What one problem would I try to solve, if I could? It would be this one — the problem of the human heart. But I can’t change the human heart, and neither can you! Only God can change it — and He will, as we submit our hearts to Him and turn our lives over to Jesus Christ.

Has this happened in your life? Make sure of your commitment to Christ — and then ask Him to help you light up the corner of the world where He has placed you with His light. The Bible says, “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
