Let me ask you a question: If Jesus were somehow to appear at your church and begin speaking to the congregation, do you think you’d still fall sleep? I doubt it.
In fact, Jesus is already present in your church! That doesn’t mean the service is perfect or the sermon is always exciting or interesting, but whenever God’s people come together, Jesus is spiritually present with them, and He wants them to see Him as He really is, and worship Him and learn from Him. Jesus said, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20).
To put it another way, what difference would it make to you if you went to church knowing you’d meet with Jesus? For one thing, you’d probably prepare your heart and mind before you ever arrived (and you’d also get enough rest so you weren’t tempted to nod off). You’d also go with a sense of expectancy, praying that God would speak to you through the hymns and message and prayers.
Perhaps, however, the real reason you find church uninteresting is because you’ve never met Jesus personally or committed your life to Him. If this is the case, I urge you to be honest about your spiritual condition, and then by faith turn to Christ and open your heart and life to Him. Then ask Him to help you not only to be alert in church, but to hear His Word and apply it to your life.
