Hurricane Laura
This is the scene in Lake Charles—a Louisiana city about 40 miles from the Gulf Coast. Early Thursday morning, Hurricane Laura ripped through the city and left this path of destruction.

Hurricane Laura first hit Louisiana's coast as a Category 4 storm before passing over Lake Charles. One hundred mph-plus winds ripped off roofs, downed trees and left buildings—like this gas station—unrecognizable.
After hunkering down in the Dallas area ahead of the storm, the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (RRT) arrived in Lake Charles within 24 hours of Laura's landfall.

“We know that even beyond the physical damage, the emotional toll that a storm like this takes is significant, and our crisis-trained chaplains will be there to share the peace and hope that can only be found in Jesus Christ," RRT International Director Jack Munday said.
In addition to the Billy Graham chaplains in Lake Charles, others are serving in the nearby cities of DeRidder and Jennings. More chaplains will deploy to DeQuincy, which sits 25 miles northwest of Lake Charles, later this week.
With many power lines down or damaged, more than 300,000 people are still without power in Texas and Louisiana.

During their drive to Lake Charles, the Rapid Response Team noticed outages more than an hour outside the city.
For the believer, there’s always a reason to praise God—even in the midst of unimaginable disaster.
Busted windows and blown-out walls at First Baptist Church show just how powerful the storm was. So far, Hurricane Laura has claimed at least 16 lives in the United States.

While life has come to a screeching halt in these areas of Louisiana, God is still present in these communities. That’s the hope our crisis-trained chaplains are sharing with devastated residents.
