Q:

My parents weren't married when I was born, and in fact I don't even know who my father was. Is God going to reject me because I was illegitimate? I don't know much about religion, but this worries me.

A:

You should not worry about this; God doesn’t look down on you because your parents weren’t married. After all, you had no control over this, and even if you grew up mistakenly feeling you weren’t quite worthy of respect from others, this has nothing to do with God’s love for you.

And that’s the most important truth I can tell you: God loves you. You may not know who your father was, but you have another Father—your Heavenly Father—who has been loving you and caring for you all these years. He will never abandon you! The prayer that Jesus gave His disciples begins this way: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed (or honored) be your name” (Matthew 6:9).

How do I know God loves you? I know it because He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to give His life for you. We have sinned—and because we have sinned, we are separated from God and deserve only His judgment. But when Jesus died on the cross, all our sins were placed on Him, and He took upon Himself the judgment we deserve. God loves you that much!

What must you do? By a simple prayer of faith invite Christ to come into your life to forgive you—and He will. When you do, you will become a child of God, part of His family forever. God’s promise is for you: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1).

Ask Christ to be your Lord and Savior.
