Q:

Is earth the only planet in our solar system that has life, do you think, or is there life on other planets? I like to watch science fiction programs on TV that talk about life on other planets, but I wonder if the Bible says anything about this.

A:

From what I read, most scientists doubt that there is any kind of life on the other planets in our solar system; the harshness of their environments makes it very unlikely.

Nor does the Bible say whether or not there is life like ours elsewhere in the universe. There may be– but we simply don’t know. The Bible’s focus is on us and our relationship with God. If there is life elsewhere in the universe, it is there because God created it, and it is just as dependent on Him as we are for its existence. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

It’s interesting to speculate on questions like this–but I hope you won’t overlook the larger issues about God’s creation. For example, have you ever stopped to think how great God must be–so great that He brought the whole universe into existence, and sustains it by His power? The psalmist declared, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).

But the greatest truth about God is that He not only created us, but He loves us. He loves us so much that He wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven–and He sent His Son into the world to make this possible. Have you asked Christ to come into your life? If not, open your heart to Him today.
