Rock the River mixes seven hours of rock and hip-hop with a positive message aimed at young people. The first stop was Baton Rouge on July 18. After St. Louis, the tour heads to the Quad Cities (Aug. 8) and Minneapolis-St. Paul (Aug. 16).
Mike Jones, senior pastor of Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis, says he is eager to “see and sense a great outpouring of the spirit of God in a diverse way. I am hopeful that Rock the River will be not only culturally relevant, but it would appeal to diversity in a great, great way.”
Jones hopes that churches from all ethnic groups will come and be drawn to the cross of Christ, especially because of the diverse appeal of Rock the River.
“We hope the after effect will be a revolution within not only the urban city sector, but the metropolitan area,” Jones adds.
Dr. Bruce McCoy, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church agrees. “Talk about a tale of two cities. There is the city and then there is the surrounding region and each is quite different.
“But whether it is the city or the suburbs – people who are really devastated by the economy or folks who have comfortable margins to weather it – we all have at heart the same basic spiritual need. That is to know Christ and to have peace in our lives.”
McCoy adds, “Look, we have a timeless message to help these kids get set free and have eternal life, but we have got to get their attention. Jesus said to be fishers of men. We’ve got our poles out there and are fishing, but we have no lures.”
The bands who are part of the Rock the River Tour, says McCoy, “are some of the shiniest lures we can throw in the water to win people to Christ.”
