Too often in the rush to succeed at work, our relationship with God and with our family can be pushed aside.
If anyone understands the challenges of balancing a demanding job with raising a strong, Christ-centered family, it’s America’s 48th Vice President Mike Pence.
Over 200 people gathered at the Billy Graham Library on Thursday to meet him and get a signed copy of his book, Go Home for Dinner: Advice on How Faith Makes a Family and Family Makes a Life.
Within the book’s pages, Pence and his eldest daughter, bestselling author Charlotte Pence Bond, offer personal stories and advice about placing faith and family above other commitments.
“Our prayer is that this book will be a blessing to people and turn their hearts back to home,” Pence said. “I really believe, as the title of the book says, faith makes a family and family makes a life.”
Dave and Kathy Bruns—some of the first guests in line—decided to take a detour on their trip from Florida to Indiana to attend the book signing.
“I want to learn more about how [Pence] walked his faith out while in office,” shared Kathy. “The world needs to get back to God’s truth, and I think that is what Pence is standing for.”
Another visitor, Liberty University freshman Hayden Hyman, shared how much he admires the way Pence keeps Jesus Christ at the center of his family and career.
“I want to see what shaped Pence, where he started, and what shaped who he is today,” Hyman explained.
The idea for the book was born when Pence was still in office. As he shared with a friend the idea for writing his memoirs, his friend asked how he and his wife, Karen, kept their family together through the demands of life in politics. “That’s the book I would read,” the friend added.
Billy Graham also understood the importance of prioritizing Jesus Christ and family. Though he often traveled, the evangelist wisely invested in his relationships with his wife and five children.
“No subject is closer to my heart than the family,” he once said.
“I have been inspired by the Grahams’ legacy of faith,” Pence shared after the book signing. “When we make God’s priorities our priorities, He will bless our path.”
