Being a parent is the greatest responsibility most of us will ever face, and I know it’s especially difficult for those who have to bear it alone. Perhaps your letter will encourage others to look around them and see what they can do to help those who are single parents.

But let me assure you that God knows all about your situation, and He wants to help you and give you the wisdom you need to raise your sons. We are never alone when we know Christ! If you have never done so, ask Him to come into your life today. Then commit each day to Him, and ask Him to guide you. The Bible’s promise is true: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Then take practical steps to encourage your sons and steer them in the right direction. Monitor what they see on television or the computer; know who their friends are; take time to help with their homework; stress the importance of staying in school; warn them about drugs and other dangers; set clear guidelines. Most of all, encourage them to give their lives to Christ.

In addition, seek out a church where Christ is preached, and where both you and your sons can grow spiritually. Be sure it has an active youth program also; few things will help them more than having Christian friends their own age.
