I can assure you that people 2,000 years ago were just as knowledgeable about the facts of life as we are today. After the angel told Mary she would bear God’s Son, she was puzzled and immediately responded, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke 1:34, NKJV).
And yet the Bible’s witness is clear: Jesus Christ was conceived without a human father. At first Joseph (who was engaged to Mary) refused to believe it, but not wanting to bring public disgrace to Mary (whom he deeply loved), he decided to end their engagement quietly. But God intervened, and an angel revealed the truth to him: God alone was the father of her child. The angel declared, “Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20).
If Jesus were just another human being, then you’d be right to be skeptical about the virgin birth. But Jesus Christ was not just another human being. Instead, He was God in human flesh! And once you understand this, His virgin birth will make perfect sense to you, because by it God was proving Jesus’ uniqueness.
This Christmas I invite you to look with an open heart and mind at Jesus Christ as He is found in the New Testament. When you do, you’ll realize not only that He was God in human flesh, but that He came to reconcile us to God. His promise is for you: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).
