The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (RRT) recently served in Charlotte, North Carolina, during protests on behalf of George Floyd who died while in police custody May 25. Here, a smile speaks volumes during trying times.
Crisis-trained chaplains began their response by offering a ministry of presence during an "It Ends Now" march.
The gathering was organized by over 50 churches and faith groups.
Since then, thousands have peacefully protested in Charlotte, which is also Billy Graham's hometown.
The Rapid Response Team also offered support and prayers to those in Minneapolis, where Floyd died. The city was home to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) for over 50 years before it moved its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina.
This calm gathering was in stark contrast to a Charlotte protest the previous night, where demonstrators threw items at law enforcement and officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Properties were damaged and businesses looted just hours after local officials declared a state of emergency.
As crowds came with different signs, many carried the same message—a desire for racial justice in America.

Several crisis-trained chaplains shook hands with police, many whom have had difficult weeks as protests nationwide became violent.

Chaplain Kevin Williams (in vest on left), who also ministered in Minneapolis, talks with Charlotte locals. “Through this response, we’re praying as we provide emotional and spiritual care, that those who know the Lord Jesus Christ would be encouraged and those who don’t know Him would come out of the darkness and into the marvelous light,” Williams said previously.
