Christmas carolers, holiday treats, twinkling lights, and a live Nativity will once again bring this special season to life at the Billy Graham Library’s “Christmas at the Library” December 1-23. New features for the 2009 Christmas season include an exhibit of Ruth and Billy Graham’s personal Christmas cards dating back to the 1940s and more live music than last year.
Many local churches and school groups will provide musical entertainment during “Christmas at the Library” this year, as well as harpists, hand bell choirs and quartets. The local chapter of the “Singing Men of America” will perform during the month of December.
Many children will be sure to enjoy the live Nativity, carriage rides and a petting zoo. “There is something wondrous in watching children’s faces as they see the live Nativity and think about what it must have been like on that first Christmas, or take their first carriage ride through the twinkling lights,” said Diane Wise, Promotions Manager for the Billy Graham Library. “It’s a special place where friends and families can celebrate the season together!”
Volunteer Helen Nachenberg reads to children each evening on the patio. “It is such a blessing to read Christmas stories to the children and to watch the parents and grandparents just relax and enjoy such a special time,” she said. “The patio with its beautiful Christmas tree, rugs on the floor and rocking chairs gives you the feel of actually sitting in a living room. I count it such a joy as I read to the children and see their eyes sparkle to hear Christmas stories which I love to read to them.”
The Library will open daily at 9:30 a.m. and close at 9 p.m., Monday-Saturday. The Christmas activities will begin each evening at 5 p.m. The children’s petting zoo will be open from 1-3 p.m., also Monday-Saturday. Carriage rides are $5 per adult and $2 per child under the age of 12.
In 2008, more than 21,000 people visited during the holiday season, experiencing a tour of the Library and enjoying the festivities. Thousands more drove through the property to see the lights and catch a glimpse of the live camel stationed in the Nativity.
Groups of 15 or more require reservations. To schedule a group tour, please call 704-401-3270.
