Q:

I'm 95 years old and I know I don't have much longer to live. I've gone to church all my life, but is that enough to get me into heaven? I'm honestly not sure if I'm saved or not, and I wish I knew. Or does God keep us guessing until we die?

A:

No, God won’t keep us guessing about our salvation – not if we’ll trust in His promises and believe in what He has already done for us. Let me explain.

Only one thing separates us from God and keeps us out of heaven, and that is our sin. God is holy and pure – and because of that, even one sin on our part would be enough to keep us out of heaven. That’s why we can’t get to heaven by our own efforts, because no matter how good we are, we still are sinners in God’s eyes. As the Bible says, “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10).

How, then, can we be cleansed of our sins? Only God can do it – and that is what He did when He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. When Christ died on the cross, all our sins were transferred to Him, and He took the judgment we deserved. He died in our place! Now God offers us salvation – not as a reward for our goodness, but as a free gift. The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

But like any other gift, we must receive it and make it our own – and that’s what I am asking you to do right now. Don’t let another day go by without Jesus Christ, but by faith trust Him alone for your salvation – beginning right now.
