No, the Bible does not teach that we will ever be completely free of sin in this life; even the Apostle Paul declared, “Not that I have … been made perfect, but I press on” (Philippians 3:12).
Do you remember the last time you had the flu? You probably felt terrible–and with good reason. That flu virus had invaded your whole body, and it made you weak all over. That is what sin is like. Sin has invaded our lives, making us morally and spiritually weak–and we will never be completely free of it this side of eternity.
Why is this? One reason is that sin has weakened us so much that we don’t have the strength to overcome its power. Sin is like a deadly disease that infects every part of us: our bodies, our minds, our emotions, our relationships, our motives–everything. You see, we don’t become sinners because we sin; we sin because we are sinners.
But listen: We don’t need to fear sin’s penalty, nor do we need to be slaves to its power. The only sinless person who ever lived was Jesus Christ, but on the cross He took our sins upon Himself so that we could be forgiven. The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Have you accepted God’s gift of salvation for yourself? If not, open your heart to Christ today.
