Visitor at Billy Graham Library: ‘He Was the Face of God to Me’

The Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina, is an ongoing ministry of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Pulling into the Billy Graham Library parking lot in his electric blue semi-truck, Michael Lackey shifted down to first gear before braking to a stop and cutting the engine.

He jumped down the steps of the cab, headed straight to the welcome desk inside and asked to speak to a Library volunteer named John Coyle.

Michael first came to the Library three months earlier, in May. He was out of work, his job interviews went nowhere and things weren’t going well in his life.

“I was feeling really small, scared, confused, washed out, used up and worthless,” he said.

He came to the Library because he’d heard from others that it was a place of prayer.

He met John on that earlier visit, shared his story, and asked for prayer—including prayer about a new interview for a job as a trucker.

“I figured he would tell me to go into the prayer room and write down my request to be prayed over later, but he did not.

“John walked with me into the prayer room, knelt down with me, and lifted a prayer over me that moved my heart and blessed me. He was the face of God to me that morning when I needed it most.

Michael left the Library that day greatly encouraged and with a sense of God’s presence. At the interview, he passed all the tests with flying colors and was hired on the spot.

Almost three months later, his route brought him near the Library, and he took the opportunity to stop and say thanks.

It wasn’t John’s day to volunteer, but the Library staff videotaped Michael in front of his truck as he recorded a message to John, sharing how his life had turned around and giving God the glory.
