Take The Greatest Journey This Christmas

By A Letter from Franklin Graham   •   November 24, 2010

As we come to this Christmas season, there are millions and millions of people around us who are going to Hell. Every time we go to the mall, a restaurant, or the grocery store, we are passing by or sitting beside souls lost for eternity. They may be dressed nicely, affluent, or poor, but their souls are lost and destined for Hell. They need to know Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. And the good news of Christmas is that the Savior has come.

The greatest journey ever undertaken in all of history was when Jesus “came down from heaven” 2,000 years ago (John 3:13, NKJV) to a Bethlehem stable. The Scriptures foretold the arrival of the Savior, who would come for one purpose: to rescue men, women, and children from their sins.

The Lord of all creation willingly left the glorious splendor of Heaven to come to our fallen world, where He died on a cross, rose from the grave, and ascended triumphantly to the right hand of the Father.

This Christmas, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has a remarkable opportunity that I would like to share with you to reach children and their loved ones around the world with this glorious Good News.

In the coming weeks, Operation Christmas Child will be distributing gift-filled shoe boxes to children in more than 100 countries. This project of Samaritan’s Purse has collected and delivered shoe boxes filled with Christmas gifts to more than 80 million poor or suffering children all over the world.

This year BGEA is partnering with Operation Christmas Child (OCC) in its follow-up program to help disciple and train many of these children who receive Christ as Savior as a result of OCC’s outreach. This new program is called The Greatest Journey. It’s a 12-lesson series–currently in 28 languages–that is taught by trained local volunteers who have a heart to see children become faithful followers of Christ. Children who finish the entire study receive a special New Testament and a certificate. Already we have numerous reports of family members who have been saved through the testimony of their children who completed the course. This multiplies the impact of the Gospel in communities around the world.

Through the ministry of BGEA, millions of children who are receiving shoe box gifts can learn about the greatest gift of all, the “gift of … eternal life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:23). You can help make this possible. With a gift of just $6, you can “adopt” a child who is eager to learn, providing 12 Bible lessons and a New Testament. For $90, you can adopt a classroom of 15 children. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference, an investment that can change a child’s life now and for eternity. Could there be any better way to celebrate the birth of Jesus?

I have just returned from the former Soviet bloc nation of Latvia, where we proclaimed to overflow crowds that “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2, NIV). God drew many people to Himself.

Two weeks earlier, I led a Crusade in Osaka, Japan, which God greatly blessed–nearly one out of every 12 in attendance made public decisions for Christ, a remarkable response in the Japanese culture. That same weekend my oldest son, Will, led a Crusade in the South American nation of Uruguay, the most secular country in the Western Hemisphere, and more than fifteen hundred were changed by the power of the Gospel. This is all the work of God, and we stand in awe.

We are excited about the opportunities God has given us for next year, and I ask for your prayers. We start the new year in Haiti with an all-out evangelistic effort marking the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed over 300,000 people there. Our chaplains have been on the ground since the quake working with Haitian pastors, ministering to those who suffered so greatly–and more recently, they have ministered in the midst of the terrible cholera epidemic I am sure you have seen on the news.

From Haiti we will be going in March to Liberia, to bring the hope of the Gospel to a country that has been devastated by 20 years of civil war. In the following months we also have Crusades scheduled in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, the Jersey Shore, and Denver, before heading to Canada and later to India. In every place, we will preach the message of repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus Christ, the only message that will save from Hell.

Thank you for your prayers–they are vital to our work. And thank you for partnering with us financially. We are grateful for everything you do to make this work possible.

May God bless you and your family this Christmas, and may your heart overflow with His peace and joy throughout the coming year.

Franklin Graham

Your gift of $6 will provide the Greatest Journey discipleship materials and a New Testament for one child. What better value is there than “adopting” a child for discipleship for just $6 or a classroom of 15 for $90? The program–currently in 28 languages–helps children come to know Christ and learn how to be faithful followers and share their faith.

My father has always loved to preach and write about Christ’s faithfulness. I believe this is because he has experienced that sustaining faithfulness so deeply and personally in his own life through the years. From his many insights on the subject, we’ve collected 31 hope-filled reflections for an exclusive new devotional book, Alone with the Savior. We’ll send you a copy as our thanks when you give a gift this month.

I want to thank you, Franklin and your father. You have made it possible for so many other people to know Christ. By doing the shoe box ministry, you have allowed your friends in God to become involved in a more personal way. Each year we pick children in our family to help pick out things for the shoebox. This helps them appreciate all their blessings. Thank you for this opportunity.

  6. David says:

Franklin As I live in Los Angeles I am most eager to know when your Crusade willl be here as our city is in very deep spiritual darkness. You have to live here to Really Know how bad it is. I am hoping that some of the Crusaders will walk the streets of LA and Hollywood sharing the salvation of Christ with the lost people of LA. We need an all out attack upon the satanic spirits of darkness that have this city in a vice-like grip. The Christians of LA eagerly await your LA Crusade. God Bless you my friend.

  7. Ebony says:

When I was young I asked God not to take my father, but he did it anyway. That was the beginning of me doubting that God will do something for me. My father was my only cheerleader. Now I'm marred and I understand I wouldn't be where I'm at, if that wouldn't have happened to my father. God gives me enough to help others. I need him to help me. I Love the Lord, Just when I'm trying to know the word, my husband gets an hiv test and now we have to go get the result, his only crime is loving someone like me. Pleases pray that the results are negative. Bless us with kids from my body.
