Haiti’s Festival of Hope

By   •   January 3, 2011

Next Wednesday, January 12, marks the one-year anniversary of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti. The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (RRT) deployed chaplains to the devastated island nation within 24-hours of the earthquake. In the year since, chaplains have prayed with and provided emotional and spiritual help for over 18,000 people. They’ve also worked alongside Samaritan’s Purse staff and volunteers providing medical aid, food, clean water, and temporary housing. The efforts of both the Billy Graham RRT and Samaritan’s Purse will continue for months – perhaps even years – to come.

This weekend, Franklin Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association will conduct the Festival of Hope in the National Soccer Stadium. Preston Parrish, Executive Vice President of Ministries for the BGEA revealed the heart and hope behind this outreach. “It will have been almost one year after the earthquake, and the physical devastation is still very great, especially with the recent cholera outbreak,” he explained. “Many months ago, Franklin Graham was asked to come and do this Festival. The church leaders there felt like it was the moment of all moments to proclaim the Gospel. This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the spiritual landscape of that country.”

According to John Cass, Director of Counseling and Follow-up, 493 churches representing 93 denominations throughout Haiti banded together to invite BGEA to conduct this special evangelistic event. “Fifty-four prayer networks are in place and over 8,000 people have gone through the Christian Life and Witness training in preparation for the Festival,” he said. Tens of thousands of people will be in the stadium and tens of thousands of others will be in makeshift camps around the stadium. The event will also be broadcast on radio and television in Haiti.

I know that your organization is doing God's work throughout the World and I really support and appreciate that. But I would really l've to see the Gospel presented even more clearly. Ephesians 2:8-9. Please don't confuse people with the Discipleship message. First they must trust in Jesus alone.
