Getting Her Hands Dirty in Liberia

Cissie Graham Lynch insists she isn’t scared of fish. But that was before she waded in the mud of the fish pond in Liberia.

“I screamed like a five-year-old girl,” said the daughter of Franklin Graham, after seeing a huge catfish jump out of the pond.

“Fish don’t bother me. I love fishing, but when you’re in the mud up past your knees, you can’t see catfish this big.”

Cissie Graham Lynch was recently in Monrovia, Liberia, preparing for the Franklin Graham All-Liberia Life Festival coming up this week.

“There is a desperate need for the Gospel here,” she said. “Not a twisted Gospel that many Christians around the world, even those in our own country seem to get, but many of them have never just heard the pure Gospel before.

“That’s what we need to pray for this nation – that their hearts will be opened up to what the Gospel really means. To restore the joy and hope that was taken away from them.”

Cissie Graham Lynch has been blogging about her experiences since her visit earlier this month. Her latest post is about getting muddy in the fish pond – part of a Samaritan’s Purse aquaculture project.

This wasn’t just any ordinary fish pond. This pond is being used as a place where a community has form and purpose, where people are finding Jesus. But it’s nearly impossible, as she found out, to catch fish and stay clean at the same time.

“It’s muddy. It’s a pond. It’s a fish,” she said. “This is what the people do to raise money for their church, build their community together.”
