Florida Woman Takes ‘The Cross’ to Haiti

By   •   March 5, 2014

Four months after sharing the My Hope video “The Cross” in her Tavares, Fla., community clubhouse, Rachel Wemple is taking the Gospel message across international borders, 800 miles from home.

This week, Wemple is taking part in a mission trip to Bayonnais, Haiti. She’s working with a local ministry to share the hope of Jesus with women and children while teaching the women practical skills to help them earn a living.

As Wemple was preparing for her second annual trip to Haiti, it dawned on her that a My Hope video could be a powerful tool to take along.

“While we were there last year, one of the things used in working with the women was an animated film on personal hygiene and how to have a safer birth,” Wemple said. “I just watched the intensity on their faces, watching those pictures. Pictures speak volumes, because some of the women are illiterate.”

Wemple contacted the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) to ask for some extra My Hope videos. This week as she boarded a plane to Haiti, a special copy of “The Cross” with Creole subtitles was tucked inside her purse.

This isn’t the the first time My Hope has been shared with the Haitian people. In July 2011, a year after a catastrophic earthquake rocked the island, the BGEA partnered with more than 5,300 Haitian churches for My Hope Haiti. As a result, more than 100,000 people reported making decisions for Christ.

Wemple hopes to share the video with about 150 women this Friday, March 7. She’s asking believers to pray that many women will come to know Jesus—a goal that can be especially challenging in a place where Voodoo is the predominant religion. Many people worship an unreachable, impersonal god.

“They understand darkness,” Wemple said. “They feel it every single day that they live. There is one woman who came up for prayer last time. She said, ‘I am not ready to receive Jesus, but I am asking for prayer for deliverance.’ I have a picture of her that I keep in my prayer book.”

Wemple personally understands the need for deliverance. Before she let Christ into her life, she says she dabbled in the occult and the New Age Movement and only found darkness. Now, she does everything she can to share the light and hope of Jesus with others.

“I want them to know the love of God—what that means, what He did,” she said. “Jesus is our hope. He’s our only hope.”

Many believers are preparing to share “The Cross” throughout the United States this Easter. Wemple plans to keep using her My Hope videos to communicate the Gospel message through Billy Graham’s preaching and the powerful, true stories of people who discovered Christ’s love when they needed it most.

“I would encourage people to take every opportunity to share the DVD,” she said. “There’s more than one way to share it. I wrapped one for Christmas and gave it to our garbage man. Just share it. We’re sharing hope. We’re sharing Jesus. We’re sharing the greatest treasure anyone could ever have.”

  1. Patty Sculley says:

The Lord impressed on my heart to go to Billy Grahams’ web site. I was saved at nine years old in San Francisco, Ca. at the Cow Palace. My deaf grandmother took me to see Mr. Graham. Some years ago I sent Mr. Graham a thank you for his ministry. Today I am preparing to go to Gonaives, Haiti where there are 100 orphans living in a church. They cannot afford the rent for their building. I am going to be speaking on Apr.3 and 6 in the church there. I just want to once again thank Mr. Graham for the day he shared Jesus love and the Lord took control of my life. Blessing to all who serve there. Patty
