Children: The Foundation of the New Haiti

By Janet Chismar, with additional reporting from Samaritan's Purse   •   January 10, 2011

“Today you see the foundation for the new Haiti being laid. A new Haiti is being built on Jesus Christ.”

The Festival volunteer who has been helping with BGEA and Samaritan’s Purse efforts for the last year spoke of his excitement to see young children on fire for the knowledge of God.

The people of Haiti have been looking for answers to their problems for 206 years, said Julien. “The answer is Jesus Christ. Praise God that He has touched Franklin Graham’s heart to come to my country and share the Gospel.”

Pastor Jean St. Cyr also believes that investing in Haiti’s children is the foundation for the future. “This is a good time—kids—it’s a good time to seed in their hearts, because this is the time they can believe. Pray that the seed will stay in their hearts and grow.”

KidsFest was a special time in the live of these children, St. Cyr added. “Only God can tell [what will happen in the future], but I know it will be positive.”

During the event, one young boy came onto the field near the stage and simply got on his knees, raised his arms and started praying. “It was so moving and touching,” said a BGEA staff person who observed this beautiful moment. “The greatest journey is only just beginning for this child and so many more in Port-au-Prince. Please lift up these young believers in prayer!”

Another way that Franklin Graham’s ministries invested in the future of Haiti this weekend is through an Operation Christmas Child outreach, which will be followed by The Greatest Journey discipleship courses.

Nearly 500 children crowded into the Evangelist Church of Nazon in Port-au-Prince on January 8, according to a report from Samaritan’s Purse.

“The children who came here today did not know they were going to receive Operation Christmas Child gifts,” said Pastor Jeune Cleber. “This is a surprise. After all they have been through, the children needed to be encouraged. We wanted to put a smile on their faces and let them know that with God, everything will be okay.”

Pastor Cleber, who also serves as the executive director of the Council of Evangelical Churches of Haiti, is coordinating Operation Christmas Child distributions and implementing The Greatest Journey discipleship program in churches across Haiti.

“We are training church leaders how to share the Gospel with children,” Pastor Cleber said. “We want the children to know Christ and receive the greatest gift in life.”
