Story
What Does Money Have to Do With It?
Answer
Why doesn't anyone ever preach on the story I heard when I was in Sunday School, about the widow (I think) who was praised by Jesus although she gave very little to God's work? All I ever hear is preachers urging people to give more money, and frankly I get tired of it.
Answer
About this time of year, I just stop going to church for a few weeks because all they talk about is the church budget and how we need to give more. It'll be even worse this year since people aren't giving as much because of the recession. I don't think preachers ought to talk about money, do you?
Answer
Toward the end of last year we got dozens of letters from charities and religious organizations asking us for money. But with the economy so bad we decided not to give very much this year, because we might need the money if one of us loses our job. Were we wrong?
Story
Facing The Financial Crisis
Answer
My husband and I just lost our home. We got talked into buying it with nothing down and low payments the first two years, and we just didn't think about what would happen later. Now we're back in a rented trailer. We're so discouraged we don't know what to do. Maybe you'll have some encouraging words.
Answer
I'm in complete shock, because the other day my husband admitted he's gambled away almost all of his retirement money. I knew he liked to go to the casinos with his friends, but I had no idea this was happening. I don't have a question, but maybe my letter will help someone avoid this.
Answer
We're really struggling financially, and it's all I can think about. My wife still has a part-time job, but I lost my job a couple of months ago and I just can't find anything. We pray and pray, but nothing happens. I'm beginning to wonder if God even cares.
Answer
We've been married for three years, and the only thing we ever argue about is money. Now with the economy getting worse and my husband's job in danger we're arguing even more. How can we avoid this? It upsets us to argue, but it's becoming a real habit.
Answer
I have a serious problem with buying things I can't afford or don't need. I guess I'm a compulsive shopper, and I just can't get it under control. My husband gets very upset when the credit card bills come in and says I just need more will power, but nothing seems to work. Can God help me?
Answer
My husband and I are upset because our church is talking about a campaign to raise an enormous amount of money for a new building. We think the old building is sufficient for our needs. The first Christians didn't even have church buildings, did they?
Answer
I don't mean to shock you, but I'm disappointed with God. I have a lot of financial problems, and if He loved me He'd be doing something about them. But nothing changes, so why should I think He cares?
