Thoughts and Actions

Robert Browning said, “Thought is the soul of the act.” Emerson said, “Thought is the seat of action. The ancestor of every action is thought.” If God destroyed the world once for its continually evil imaginations, is it not reasonable to believe that all of the sin, lust, and licentiousness that is rampant today grieves His heart just as it did in that day? Many people dream of sin, imagine sin, and-if granted the opportunity-would indulge in sin. All they lack is the occasion to sin. So, in the sight of God, they are sinners as great as though they actually had committed immorality. All transgressions begin with sinful thinking.

You who have come to Christ for a pure heart, guard against the pictures of lewdness and sensuality which Satan flashes upon the screen of your imagination, select with care the books you read, choose discerningly the kind of entertainment you attend, the kind of associates with whom you mingle, and the kind of environment in which you place yourself. You should no more allow sinful imaginations to accumulate in your mind and soul than you would let garbage collect in your living room.

Prayer for the day

I need my thoughts to be continually purified by the cleansing power of Your Spirit, almighty God.

  1. Max says:

Forgive me Father for I sin in my mind. We are connected directly with God. It is almost impossible for our human mind to comprehend that our every thought is being reviewed by God as we think it and that every lie we tell will find us out.

  2. Vernon Lockner says:

I think it was Martin Luther who compared our thoughts as believers to flying birds that fly over our heads. They may fly over our heads, or through our minds. But as Christians we can choose through the power of the Holy Spirit to not let those thoughts make a nest there.

  3. Daniel Ejibeofor says:

Thank You, Lord for this wonderful truth You’ve revealed to me today. Help me that I will never offend You by harbouring evil and sinful imaginations. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

  4. Adepeju Robert James says:

Father cleanse my thoughts by the blood of Jesus Christ and let every root of flesh be uprooted in my life.

  5. Gerry says:

Excellent advice from Billy once again.. May the good Lord continue to bless him as a fervent prayer warrior . Always be aware of your surroundings and who you choose to be your friends . Pray earnestly for the gift of discernment. Satan knows your weakest point and is a very cunning foe. Ask God for his full armour each and every day and he will light your path .

Wow! What a tall order is today’s devotion! In the times we live one can hardly turn around without sin staring them in the face. Many times I am watching a G rated movie on tv and part of the way through it some actor says “Oh God”, “My God” or something similar. These scripted words are taking the name of God in vain. So I must change channels and miss an otherwise good movie.

  7. Joyce paul says:

MAY I FEED on YOUR Goodness every day, LORD, so my heart will grow Stronger through The SPIRIT. GOD’S TRAINING IS DESIGNED TO GROW US IN FAITH. Praise The Lord!!! Amen.
