Q:

Who or what is the Holy Spirit? I don't come from a religious background, but I gave my life to Jesus a few months ago. Do I need to get the Holy Spirit also? I don't want to miss heaven because I failed to get something I need.

A:

I’m thankful you have given your life to Christ, and I want to assure you that you now belong to Him forever. The Bible says that once we’ve given our lives to Him, nothing can separate us from His love (see Romans 8:31-39).

The Holy Spirit is God Himself, as He works in our world and in our lives. The Bible teaches that when we come to Christ and give our lives to Him, God Himself comes to live within us by His Spirit. In fact, even before we come to Christ, God the Holy Spirit has already been at work in our lives, convicting us of our sin and convincing us of our need to repent and turn to Christ. Jesus said, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (John 6:44).

Why did God give us His Holy Spirit? One reason is to protect us from the devil’s attempts to win us back. Another reason is to give us the power we need to resist sin, and to live the way God wants us to live. The Bible says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23).

If you know Christ, the Holy Spirit already dwells within you (whether you feel His presence or not). Now submit your life to Him every day, and ask Him to help you become more like Christ.
