Q:

What does God look like? I tried to draw a picture of Him once. It was kind of like a whole bunch of suns, with a face in the middle. But my Mom said no one knows what God really looks like. Is this true? I am 9 years old.

A:

I’m thankful you want to know more about God, and I hope you will never lose your curiosity about Him. He made you, and He wants to be your friend and walk with you the rest of your life.

Your mother is right; no one knows what God looks like—but the reason is because God isn’t like we are. You and I have physical bodies, and everything we see around us is part of the physical universe (even the suns you included in your drawing). But God isn’t like us; God doesn’t have a physical body. God instead is a spiritual being, and He is not limited to one place.

Furthermore, God has always existed, and He always will. That’s hard for us to understand, I know—but it’s true, and it’s one reason why we can always trust Him. The Bible says, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (Psalm 90:2).

But God hasn’t hidden Himself from us! Instead, God did something that is truly amazing: He came down from Heaven and became a man. That man was Jesus Christ. Do you want to know what God is really like? Look at Jesus—and when you do, you’ll discover that God loves you, and He wants to be your friend forever. And you can become His friend, by asking Jesus to come into your life. I invite you to give your life to Jesus today.
