Q:

Are computers going to take over the world? I'm too old to understand them, I guess, but I worry because computers seem to be able to do just about anything.

A:

Like you, I’m amazed at what computers can do today, and I’m sure I don’t know one-thousandth of what they can really accomplish! I also can barely imagine what computers will be able to do in 50 years, or even in10 years.

Will computers ever take over the world (whatever that means)? The future is hidden from us, of course, but who knows what might happen if a demonic tyrant or fanatical terrorist attempts to harness computers for evil purposes? The Bible warns that toward the end of the present age people will turn away from God, and evil will seemingly gain the upper hand. In those days, the Bible says, “evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived” (2 Timothy 3:13).

But the Bible also tells us an even greater truth: The future is in God’s hands, and ultimately He will destroy all evil and sin. That’s why we don’t need to live in constant fear or anxiety about the future. Someday, the Bible says, Christ will come again to establish His kingdom of perfect righteousness and justice. Is your hope and trust in Him?

As a footnote, while computers can be misused, they also can be used for great good. Through the Internet, our own organization, for example, proclaims Christ every day, even in countries that are otherwise closed to the Gospel. I often think of God’s promise to Habakkuk: “I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told” (Habakkuk 1:5).
