Q:

My parents got divorced two years ago, and I chose to go with my father. Now I'm not sure I did the right thing, because he doesn't really want me around. Sometimes I wish I could just run away somewhere. What should I do?

A:

Let me begin by telling you what you should not do: you should not even think about running away. Yes, you’re in a difficult situation—but it would only get worse if you hit the streets with nowhere to go. Some of the saddest letters I have ever received came from those who ran away from home, only to be exploited by evil men who were on the lookout for vulnerable young people.

What can you do? First, seek God’s will for your life—both now, and for the rest of your life. God loves you; He loves you so much that Jesus Christ was willing to die for you so you could become part of His family forever. If you have never done so, ask Jesus to come into your life today—and He will. He knows what is best for you, and you need His wisdom and help. His love for you will never change.

Then ask God to guide you as you make decisions about your future. Begin by thinking through your choices. For example, is it realistic for you to return to your mother? Is it possible for you to talk honestly (but calmly) with your father, helping him understand your feelings and suggesting he change his attitude?

Even if these aren’t possible, ask God to give you a new love for your father, and the inner strength to accept your situation. No matter what happens, you can depend on God’s promise: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

Don’t face life’s challenges alone. Invite Christ into your life today.
