Q:

My parents fight all the time and are talking about getting a divorce. Maybe if I moved in with one of my friends they'd stop. I'm so upset.

A:

My heart goes out to you, and to every young person who is caught in the middle of a conflict in their family. More than that, I want to assure you that God is concerned about you and your family.

One reason I wanted to reprint your letter is because I hope it will help parents realize the terrible toll that fighting and divorce take on children. God’s will isn’t conflict and turmoil; God’s will is peace and mutual love. If some reader is caught in a marriage that seems to be breaking apart, I pray you will turn to Christ and seek God’s help for your marriage. The Bible says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5).

Don’t blame yourself for your parents’ conflicts or feel that you are somehow responsible for them. They alone are responsible for whatever has gone wrong — and even if you weren’t around, they’d still have problems they need to resolve. I know this is a hard time for you, but some day it will be resolved (one way or the other), and it won’t be hanging over you. Pray for your parents, and ask God to help them heal their relationship.

The most important thing I can tell you, however, is that God loves you. People aren’t perfect — but God is, and He will never abandon you. Ask Jesus to come into your life, and then thank Him that He is with you, and you are now part of His family forever.
