Q:

My new year's resolution is to stay off drugs. I've been in rehab for several months and am staying clean so far, but secretly I fear what'll happen when I get out. Can God help me?

A:

Yes, God can help you — and He will, as you turn to Him and humbly seek His help. The Bible’s promise is for you: “The Lord helps them and delivers them…because they take refuge in him” (Psalm 37:40).

But God not only can help you — He wants to help you! The reason is because He loves you and cares what happens to you. He doesn’t want you to destroy your life; He wants to put your feet on a new path. How do I know He cares about you? I know it first of all because He made you; you aren’t here by accident. But I know it especially because Jesus Christ — God’s only Son — willingly gave His life for you. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

Begin a new life today by turning to Jesus Christ and inviting Him into your life. Confess your sins and your needs to Him, and by faith trust Him alone for your salvation. When you do, God not only forgives all your sins, but He also comes to live within you by His Spirit.

Then ask God to help you deal with your temptations. Ask Him for the courage to face your problems and deal with them, instead of trying to escape from them. In addition, turn your back on people and places that will tempt you, and instead seek out a church where Christ is preached and you’ll find people who can encourage you. May God bless you during this new year — and always.
