Q:

I dream a lot about how great it would be to be famous someday, like a movie star or recording artist. I enjoy singing with some of my high school friends, and I think it would be cool to be a celebrity. Is it wrong to think like this?

A:

It’s not wrong at your age to think about the future and set goals for your life; in fact, it’s important to do so. Far too many people, I’m afraid, drift through life without ever thinking about why they’re here or what they should be doing.

But I caution you not to fantasize about the future or dream constantly about things that probably aren’t realistic, or even worthwhile. Wanting to live the life of a celebrity may sound appealing, but how many of them are really happy and at peace? More importantly, dreaming about being famous and the center of attention all the time is self-centered and prideful, and ultimately those will destroy you. The Bible warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

Instead, I urge you to seek God’s will for your future. God made you and knows all about you, and He has a perfect plan for your life. And His plan is always best — without exception. Don’t be dazzled by paths that seem to lead to happiness, but never will. Instead, make it your goal to seek God’s plan for you.

This is why the most important step you can take is to turn to Jesus Christ and ask Him to come into your life. Then ask Him to help you become the person He wants you to be. The Bible says, “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace” (2 Timothy 2:22).
