Q:

I know I ought to go to church, but I'm a single mom with two children, and by the time the weekend rolls around I'm just too tired to make the effort. Will God understand this?

A:

God knows all about us—and yes, He understands the problems you face and the stresses you feel. Being a single parent is one of the hardest responsibilities any person will ever face, and God knows what you’re going through.

But God doesn’t just know what’s happening to you. He also loves you and has compassion on you, and He wants to help you when life’s burdens begin pressing down on you. In other words, God wants to help you become the best mother you can possibly be to your children—not just barely getting by, but helping your children become mature and responsible individuals. He also wants them to come to know Him as their friend, and to give their lives to Jesus. And He wants the same for you.

This is why I hope you’ll become involved in a church where you’ll not only feel welcome, but you’ll also discover more about God’s love for you. Ask God to guide you to a church with activities and programs for your children also. It could be the most important activity in their lives—both now and in the future.

Instead of seeing church as a burden, therefore, I hope you’ll see it as an opportunity—an opportunity to come to know Christ better and to find friends who can help and encourage you. Some of them may also be single parents, and you can learn from their experience. The Bible says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

Find refreshment in a relationship with Christ.
