How do I know God answers prayers, even if nothing happens? I've asked God to give me a sign that He is hearing me, but He hasn't. Sometimes I even wonder if it's worth it to keep on praying.

Prayer is one of our greatest privileges as God’s children, and even if God doesn’t seem to answer your prayers at first, don’t stop praying. God loves you, and no prayer goes unanswered.

Jesus once told a story about a poor widow who repeatedly asked a corrupt judge to do what was right. (You can read it in Luke 18:1-8.) Repeatedly the judge refused–not because her request was wrong, but because he just didn’t care. But because of her persistence, he eventually gave in and granted her what she deserved. In a far greater way, Jesus said, God (who is righteous and does care for us) hears the prayers of His people, and we must never give up.

But let me add two things. First, realize that sometimes God is actually answering our prayers when we don’t realize it–and the reason is because His answer may be “No” or “Wait.” Yes, we think we know what’s best for us–but God sees the whole picture, and sometimes He lovingly refuses to give us what we request, because He knows it isn’t according to His perfect plan.

Second, remember that we have the privilege of coming to God only because Jesus Christ died for our sins. Have you given your life to Him? If not, let your first prayer be one of confession and faith, asking Him to come into your life as your Lord and Savior.

Have been praying to move and sell our house. It’s been four years and every time we come close it falls through. Our house needs work we can’t afford to do, so we are trying to find a better house for the kids. We have all but given up, every time we pack we have to unpack. Our family has been torn apart by this. We have stopped praying for the sale of our house, and what ever happens, happens. Please pray for our family.

I have been praying for a job for over a year and a half. Nothing has happened. If God says a man must work in order to eat how can I do so with out a job? If this is a test of my faith and he does hear my prayers and Isaiah says he has plans to give me hope and a future, how can I continue in this? I struggle and am not sure what to even do anymore.

    1. BGEA says:

We first want to encourage you that there IS hope. While God never promises us an easy life free of problems, He does promise to be with us when we trust in Him. We aren’t meant to face life’s hardships alone. We need God, and He is always with us. Deuteronomy 31:6 that the Lord “will never leave you nor forsake you.” He can also place people in our lives to help comfort and guide us.

God created you and knows every single detail of your life. He knows the number of hairs on your head (Luke 12:6-7). He knows everything you’ve done, and you know what? It doesn’t shock Him. He loves you regardless of your past life, and He will always love you—with a love beyond human understanding. In fact, the Bible says “God IS love” (1 John 4:8). He loves you more than you can imagine. In Isaiah 43:1, He says, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Are you familiar with Jesus Christ? God loved us so much that He came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ to die for our sins so that we can have a right relationship with God and spend eternity with Him in heaven. Think about that. The God of the universe—the Holy, Almighty God—loved YOU so much that He willingly died for you so you can be with Him forever when you trust in Him. Not only that, but when we trust in Him, we find abundant life (John 10:10). We lack nothing.

So how do you find that kind of abundant life, that real peace? Jesus Christ is the bridge between us and God. Because of our sin, we are separated from God, but Jesus Christ bridges that gap. By asking Christ to forgive our sins and to come into our lives and guide us, we can have a relationship with Him. We can have hope and peace.

That doesn’t mean we will never have hardship. In fact, 2 Timothy 3:12 says, “All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Satan and others in the world don’t like to see us following Christ, yet Christ promises that when we have faith in Him, He will see us through difficulties. We can even rejoice in those difficulties because it can strengthen our faith and make us stronger. James 1:2-4 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

  7. Mekhi douglas says:

I’m not that experienced at telling if God answered or not. I’ve been praying this same prayer for 5 years now. I’m only 16 so I might have to work better at praying. But for 5 years I’ve been praying for the same thing and its been yes and no. Just today I asked for a sign but He didn’t answer. But yesterday He did. I need help on getting a straight answer.

    1. Les says:

Mekhi, what strong faith you have in God, our Father, to continue praying for 5 years. I believe that is your first blessing. I prayed for signs and received them but they only lasted until I became afraid again. God, in his love and caring, gave me what I needed to get through a horrible situation, signs. It didn’t change the outcome however. God gave me a way out but I chose not to take it because it was more important to stand up against abuse and corruption. I stood up. I paid a harsh price for doing what was right. It was my choice. I see now that even the harsh price was a softer way than other alternatives. God came through but it took me years to understand it. Bless you.
