Q:

My uncle hated God and never wanted anything to do with God, right up to the moment he died. In fact, he died with a curse on his lips, if you can believe it. Why do some people (like my uncle) insist on gambling with their souls? It doesn't make sense.

A:

You’re right; it doesn’t make sense for someone to go through life fighting and cursing God, even as they take their last breath. Why deliberately choose hell over heaven?

After all, some day we all will stand before God (whether we believe it or not) to give an account of our lives. If we’ve spent our lives rejecting Him, how can we possibly expect Him to accept us into heaven? To put it another way, if we don’t want anything to do with God now, why would we want anything to do with God in eternity? The Bible warns, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

Why did your uncle hate God so much? I don’t know what his answer would have been, but I suspect his real reason was that he simply wanted to run his own life. He didn’t want God to interfere with whatever he wanted to do, and he knew that if he yielded his life to Jesus Christ, he no longer would be in control. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

Learn from your uncle’s tragic example. God loves you; He loves you so much that His Son gave His life for you. Respond to His love by opening your heart and life to Jesus Christ. Then make it your goal to follow Him every day.
