My pets mean a lot to me, and I hate to see people neglect animals or treat them cruelly. Does the Bible say anything about how we should treat animals? God made them also, didn't He?

Yes, God made everything that lives on the earth — including the animals. In the beginning, the Bible says, “God said, ‘Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals….’ And it was so” (Genesis 1:24).

And yes, the Bible commands us to take care of the animals under our care. One of the signs of a righteous man, the Bible says, is that he takes care of his animals (see Proverbs 12:10). Even the animal of an enemy was to be treated kindly: “If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to take it back to him” (Exodus 23:4). One reason God commanded His people to rest one day out of seven was so their animals would be refreshed (see Exodus 23:12).

In fact, the Bible says we must never treat any part of God’s creation with contempt. When we do, we are indirectly treating our Creator with contempt. Instead, God calls us to be stewards or trustees of His creation, and the Bible reminds us that we are responsible to Him for the way we treat it. We’ve often forgotten this — but it’s still true, and when we ignore it we not only hurt God’s creation but we also hurt ourselves.

Most of all, however, God calls us to put Him first in our lives. He loves us, and our greatest calling is to respond to His love by opening our hearts and lives to His Son, Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 11:6, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” (This sounds as if we will have pets in heaven, does it not?)
Isaiah 11:7-9, “The cow and the bear shall graze; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea”

  5. Cris C. Dean says:

When mankind’s sin of abuse, anger, neglect or even hatred is directed towards animals, a God made living being suffers greatly! God IS love – He is 100% defined by love – Kingdom love not earthly type love – and that love applies to ALL he made!!! It’s impossible for God’s love to not hold & embrace the caring for innocent animals.

    1. Andrea Kollars says:

I have been emailing rescues for animals in the “high-kill” shelters. I love animals & is abominable the way some people treat them & harm them! I see n people make remarks about animals as if they are far beneath us, even, ones in the so-called Bible belt who claim to be very religious! I had to search & prove to them, that animals are NOT beneath us & God wants us to take care of them & treat them kindly.

  6. Paula King says:

Thank you so much for your response to this inquiry. God has enriched our lives by His creations. Just look at service dogs and guide dogs and how much of a blessing that they are to their owners. I encourage everyone to love and take care of their animals.

    Thank you.

  8. Kent says:

Who is to say God loves man more then the animals he created. The below scripture would indicate in fact animals are found in heaven.

    Revelation 19:11

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war

  9. Darrin theus says:

In order to go to heaven you have to have a soul. God didn’ t give animals souls. They were only created for the purpose of earth. God created man for heaven and tthat’s why man have soul. Animals were not created in the likeness of God.

    1. bcl says:

DarrinTheus: pets go to heaven. Ecc.3:21 says “Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?” What is a soul? Scripture says its our mind, will and emotions. God gave animals a mind, (intellect), emotions, and a will. They have their own unique personality. I haven’t read anywhere in the Bible God says otherwise. Even Romans 8 tells us that ALL Creation groans for the redemption. God is going to restore all things. Yes, the Lord tells me not even a sparrow falls to the ground without His Father knowing about it. God loves all His creation and that means complete restoration! Hallelujah! I will see my beloved Winnie again! She is safe and happy in the Masters home!

    2. Cindy says:

      Revelation 5:13
And every creature which is IN HEAVEN, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
God’s creatures have a place in heaven. Amen

  10. Bob says:

I care for reptiles, God’s beautiful and ancient creation! Thank you for the animals who enrich my life!

    1. Nancy says:

Testing ground for man not animals. They never sinned man did,we owe them they and everything fell under the curse of man.
