Do you believe God has a purpose for every person? I just read a book that says He does, but to be honest I have a hard time believing it. I think God just put us down here and then left it to us to figure out what we want to do.

Yes, I certainly believe God has a plan or purpose for every one of us. Many people go through life without ever thinking about it–but that doesn’t change the fact that God put us here for a purpose.

In other words, we aren’t here by accident; we’re here because God put us here. And He put us here for a reason–so we could come to know Him in a personal way, and then live the way He wants us to live. This is the greatest discovery you will ever make: You were created to know God, and to be His friend forever. As a young boy, my mother taught me these words from our church’s statement of belief: “Man’s chief end (or purpose) is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” I’ve never forgotten this.

God not only has a general purpose for each of us, but He also has a specific plan for each of our lives. God knows all about you, and He has a plan for you. That’s why you can pray and seek God’s will when you face decisions, and it is why you can know God is with you every moment of the day. The Bible says, “Teach me your way, O Lord; lead me in a straight path” (Psalm 27:11).

How do you find God’s plan for your life? The first step is to commit your life to Jesus Christ. Don’t wander through life without any purpose or direction, but by faith commit your life to Christ and learn to follow Him.

  1. Gary kleiner says:

I worked 23 years lost my father and job and divorce, I felt like Job without th benefits at the end. I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety daily. I would like to believe my purpose is to help others who are struggling.

    1. Sandy says:

Gary, I’m sorry to hear about all that you have endured. My encouragement to you is to press on … you are in the middle of a forest and can’t see anything because of all the trees. Continue to trust God, to cry out to him in your distress. In his perfect timing you will see his salvation and you will no longer feel like early-in-the-story-Job … God WILL bring you to a place like he did with Job at the end of the story. You will know God better, which is a gift in itself, but you will also receive ten times over all that you have lost.

Someone once said that God will give you one of three answers: yes, not yet, I have something better in mind. He loves you very much. Praying you will find strength in this storm and a community
