Do angels ever appear to people, or are they always invisible? But if they're invisible, how do we know they even exist?

Angels are certainly real; the Bible repeatedly tells us about them and the work God has given them to do. They are spiritual beings, the Bible says, who were created by God to do His will. The Bible says, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14).

Because they are spiritual and not physical beings, the angels usually are invisible and unseen by us. In fact, one of heaven’s joys, I believe, will be the joy of looking back over our lives and discovering just how often the angels intervened to save us or bless us — although we weren’t even aware of it at the time. The Psalmist said that God “will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11).

Nevertheless, the Bible also tells us that at times the angels have become visible. When God announced to the Virgin Mary that she would bear His Son, He used the angel Gabriel to convey the news to her (see Luke 1:26-38). When Jesus’ birth was announced to the shepherds outside Bethlehem, “a great company of the heavenly host appeared … praising God” (Luke 2:13). Many other examples from the Bible could be cited.

Do angels still appear? I’m convinced they do on occasion — although sometimes we may not even be aware of them, because they have chosen to appear as ordinary human beings. We should thank God for His angels, but at the same time, we shouldn’t become overly preoccupied with them. Nor should we worship them, for only God — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — is worthy of our worship.

  1. Maureen says:

I have a testimony. I believe I was approached by an angel last year. There was a man on a bike, brown hair to his shoulders. He appeared gentle, non-threatening and appeared to have very little as he approached people around me. People could/would not help him. He approached me or maybe I approached him. I asked what he needed and he needed a couple dollars for a prescription he needed desperately. I looked in my wallet and gave the four ones I had. He asked for only two dollars, I insisted on all of it. He tried to give me back the extra ones, I refused and he was very grateful. I stated “Jesus loves you, you know”. He looked through my eyes piercingly strong and said “Oh. I know the Lord” as if he knew him a different way than I do. I cried.

  6. Dennis says:

Angel’s are real. They look like you and me. Dressed modestly and very kind. They do live in spirit and also can appear in the world. When one is sleeping and hear there name called that wakes them up. Is likely an angel.

  7. CHL says:

I read Dr. Graham’s book Angels & study scripture as I find the subject of Angels & their work for God amazing. We do not pray to anyone but our Sovereign God. I believe with all my heart that there are Angels with us and that after our earthly death, it may be possible that there are those strong spirits who will at times return to walk among us, seen or unseen, doing God’s work, protecting and helping those who need his mercy and comfort. I do not believe they take the form they had on earth. But my faith and my soul tells me, Angels are walking the earth at all times. It is a mystery that will be revealed fully in Heaven. Praise Jesus in all ways he cares for us. Amen.

  8. geraldine michaux says:

Yes, angels are definitely real, they announce the birth of the LORD JESUS. I HAVE ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION SEEN AN ANGELIC APPEARANCE. I HAVE ALSO HAD ONE OR MORE WITNESSES AROUND ME THAT COULD VERIFY THE EXPERIENCE. Each time it was breathtaking. There is an unseen realm that God chooses to reveal Himself to You. When I have went through a difficult time He has Always shown His GLORY to ME. I am SO GRATEFUL to have the veil removed in that difficult time to let me KNOW that God NEVER leaves me or forsakes me.

  9. William Mayne says:

Angels are present all the time, and they do let their presences be known. Mainly when we go through something testing.

  10. Harlan Hollenbeck says:

Love this entire Holy Spirit filled answer. Especially the last statement about remembering that without God there would be no angels. He is the Creator and He alone should be worshiped as God! Im thankful for our angels, God is awesome is all His wonders and mysterious ways!
