Yes, you certainly should be concerned—and the reason is because what your boyfriend is actually saying is that he doesn’t need God. Although he may believe that God exists, he doesn’t want anything to do with God.
Instead he thinks he can get along in life without God—and if you were to marry him, this would always create a barrier between you. In times of crisis, for example, you wouldn’t be able to turn together to God for His help and comfort. Nor would you be able to work together to teach your children about God and be an example to them of His love and joy. The Bible bluntly warns, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
What can you do? First, make certain of your own commitment to Jesus Christ. God loves you; He loves you so much that He sent His Son into the world to give His life for you. If you have never done so, turn to Christ and invite Him to come into your life as your Savior and Lord.
Then pray for your friend, that God will convict him of his sin and show him his need for Christ. Ask God as well to make you an example to him of Christ’s love and purity and peace. Regardless of what the future holds for your relationship, your friend needs Christ—and God can use you to help him.
