Franklin Graham on Fox News: ‘Unbroken’ Billy Graham Connection

By   •   December 18, 2014

Franklin Graham went on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” on Wednesday to discuss the much-anticipated movie Unbroken.

The movie, which releases on Christmas Day, tells the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner and World War II hero who survived 47 days in the Pacific Ocean on a raft and two years in a Japanese POW camp.

“I think Angelina Jolie did an incredible job,” Franklin Graham said. “Unfortunately, the film stops at chapter 33. There’s 39 chapters in the book. I think probably the most important part of the book is of course when he does come home and his life does become broken; it falls apart.”

Franklin Graham talks about how Zamperini woke up in the middle of the night, choking his wife, thinking she was “The Bird,” his Japanese tormenter. “He turns to alcohol trying to get away from these nightmares that he’s having every night,” he said.

“But his wife went to hear my father (at the 1949 Billy Graham Crusade in Los Angeles). She went forward in this big tent they called the Canvas Cathedral and her life was dramatically changed,” Franklin Graham continued.

“She had already filed for divorce papers. And she came back and told her husband, because of her decision to follow Christ, she wasn’t going to divorce him. He was so overjoyed and thrilled with that, she convinced him to go hear my father.”

Zamperini was hesitant to make a decision the first night, but agreed to come a second night to hear Mr. Graham preach the Good News.

“When my father gave the invitation for people to put their faith and trust in Christ, instead of running out of the tent, he went forward,” Franklin Graham said. “His life was transformed instantly that day and it stayed with him for the rest of his life.”
